At the western end of the Gulf Shores peninsula, Fort Morgan offers a quieter side of Alabama’s coast where military history, beaches, wildlife, fishing, and scenic drives come together. The community is best known for the Fort Morgan State Historic Site, a 19th-century masonry fort that played an important role in the Battle of Mobile Bay and later served during several periods of U.S. military history. The surrounding area also provides access to beaches, boating, fishing, nature areas, and the Mobile Bay Ferry.

The historic fort sits roughly 20 miles from downtown Gulf Shores, with AL-180 continuing west to the end of the peninsula. Groups can also use the Mobile Bay Ferry from the Fort Morgan landing to connect with Dauphin Island, creating an interesting option for a Gulf Coast day trip.
